Senior Art Specialist

Jean le Clus-Theron (b. 1983, Johannesburg) represents a new wave of enthusiasm for South African art that is steering Strauss & Co into the future. After completing her Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design) at North-West University, Potchefstroom, Jean studied art history at an honours-level, her degree awarded with distinction.  Following a year of travel and work abroad, she returned to Potchefstroom in 2008 to successfully manage NWU’s Centre for Creativity Training. During her time at NWU Jean published a peer-reviewed article on land artist Strijdom van der Merwe, and also delivered a paper on his work at the University of California, Los Angeles, both in 2012.

Keen to develop her interests in contemporary art practices further, Jean completed her Master’s degree in art history at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, in 2015. During her post-graduate studies she also worked as a cataloguer at the Johannesburg offices of Strauss & Co, then under the direction of veteran auctioneer Stephan Welz. In 2015, Jean moved to Cape Town where she initially worked at SMAC Art Gallery before re-joining Strauss & Co in a revised capacity.

Jean joined Strauss & Co as an Art Specialist in 2016. She works out of our Cape Town office. Jean is qualified to address any enquiries related to Paintings, Watercolours, Drawings, Prints, Sculpture and New Media on behalf of Strauss & Co.
