Asian Ceramics and Silver Specialist
South African art historian Olivia Barrell was born and raised in Johannesburg, Barrell moved to Paris where she completed her undergraduate degree in Art History at the Sorbonne University. Barrell went on to graduate cum laude from Paris’ prestigious National Institute of Art History (INHA) for her postgraduate degrees, specialising in Chinese Ceramics from the late Ming period (namely 16th/17th century ‘blanc de chine’). After working at the Guimet Museum of Asian Arts in Paris, Barrell moved back to South Africa in 2016. With a passion for a broad range of Les Arts Décoratifs (Decorative Arts), particular fields of speciality include silver, furniture, in addition to Oriental and South African ceramics. Barrell just published CLAY FORMES, the first volume of its kind dedicated to contemporary South African ceramics.
