Speaks to the joy in the home when everyone is on leave and the
house is full of all things celebratory. The hanger a perfect bow,
unwrapping the scene below, a table setting for Christmas. The
checked tablecloth that only comes out once a year, the candles
that are placed but never lit (they are too pretty and we can use
them again for mom’s birthday party in Feb). Paper crowns are
passed round and the radio is blaring a mix of sermons and songs.
The brightest part is not the table at all, it’s the characters and
outfits squeezing in next to each other, the stories shared and the
gift of presence. Aunt Sally has come from Leeu Gamka and Oom
Freek late last night from Klaarstroom. They will be here till New
Year’s Day before returning home. Oom Freek’s crown sags a little
over his eyes and you fix it for him, careful not to tear the sides.
