A Franco-Chilean partnership of two great wineries; Concha Y Toro and Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. Located in the Maipo Valley, in Chile's central zone, Puente Alto was recognized over twenty years ago as offering ideal conditions for growing the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. The Almaviva vineyard is tended with meticulous care from pruning to harvest, with the goal was to create a ‘grand cru classé’ in Chile. Its first vintage was 1996 and today Almaviva is arguably Chile’s most famous wine.
Critics Ratings
2002 was not considered a good vintage because there was some rain farther south. But, in Puente Alto, where the vineyards for the 2002 Almaviva are, it was pretty "normal," and they didn't have the rains in March. It was a warm year, without excess. The wine is quite classical, it has evolved nicely, the palate is still pretty lively and balanced, with developed aromas. It is harmonious and in no danger of going down any time soon. This time they only had Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Cabernet Franc (67%, 29% and 4%, respectively). Merlot and Petit Verdot came later.
