About this Item

Gravel Hill Shiraz, 2006
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

With a rich history that dates back to 1692, Hartenberg has passed through the legendary families of Finlayson and Gilbey until the late Ken Mackenzie purchased the estate in 1987. Situated in its own self-contained valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, the terroir is renowned for fine quality and ageability. CWG member Carl Schultz has presided as the head winemaker for over 25 years and has produced world class, powerful reds.
The 170-hectare property has a pure water source running through it, and a number of birds and animals which call Hartenberg their home. As such, the owners and staff have accepted responsibility for the conservation of the property through considered and sustainable use of all natural resources. They have various initiatives in place to ensure an environment where nature thrives.

Previously only released through the CWG, the Gravel Hill Shiraz holds the record for the longest Guild ‘accreditation’. Only 250 cases produced of the 2006.

Critics Ratings

Single vineyard. Gently sweet and dark-fruited aromas and some red cherry. Really fresh and fine but noticeable grain to the tannins. Moreish and mouthwatering. So youthful though there's a hint of something more meaty on the finish.’ Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com (October 2012), 17.5/20

‘If Stork is the boisterous young maiden, this is the chaperone. 06 mineral lines to piercing ethereal spice, serious but ordered, powerful length of flavour. All-new Fr oak 22 months.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2005, 4.5*

This is showing well, with the extra bottle age lending a perfumy edge to the toasty spice, licorice, plum sauce and fig paste notes that have all melded together now. There's still plenty of stuffing, and though slightly roasted in feel the finish stays fresh enough, with ample graphite-fueled length. Syrah... 250 cases made.’ – Wine Spectator (April 2012), 92/100
