Shortly after Pierneef’s death in 1957, the artist's good friend, Emil Schweickerdt, held an exhibition of the artist’s last works, including Rustenberg, at his gallery and framing shop in Pretoria, at the request of Pierneef’s widow May.1

Bought by the current owner's father at a Lezard & Co auction, Pretoria, 1959.
