Jack Lugg was a passionate artist and devoted educator who headed the Technical College Art School in East London for 35 years. ‘Art is almost like a religion for me,’ said Lugg, ‘I’m merely the vehicle through which this strong spirit drives.’ He studied under Walter Battiss in his teens in Pretoria, and at the Camberwell College of Arts, London, and the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, after winning the Emma Smith scholarship in 1948.
The artist had a deep connection to the landscape, animals, and peoples of Africa and expressed this in a working career that spanned more than seven decades. Many visitors to Knysna would be familiar with his work from the Jack Lugg Art Gallery he ran there for 18 years. His work is held in many private and public collections including the Ann Bryant Art Gallery, East London; the Pretoria Art Museum, Pretoria; and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, Port Elizabeth.
