The 421 lots on offer also feature other paintings, sculptures, prints, multiples and works on paper—and, with the auction open until 8:00pm on Monday 17 September, there is still time for new, emerging and established collectors to browse the sale and bid.

The 81 works on paper are of particular interest to collectors and include works by Robert Hodgins (Lot 340, Red Figure R25 000 – 35 000), Gerard Sekoto (Lot 350, Woman Walking R 18 000 – 24 000), Cecil Skotnes (Lot 409, Centre-Composition 1st Stage R10 000 – 15 000), Douglas Portway (Lot 411, Abstract Figure R 8 000 – 12 000) and Maud Sumner (Lot 354, Riverside Warehouses R 12 000 – 16 000).

A highlight of the current sale is undoubtedly a large linocut, The Tree of Life (R 20 000 – 30 000), by master printer and artist, John Moore—and among the international works are highly collectible multiples by English artist, Henry Moore, as well as multiples by Alexander Calder (one of the first artists to put movement into sculpture and a globally acknowledged creator of affordable prints and multiples).

A number of the Natal School lots on offer will be exhibited at the Hilton Arts Festival this weekend where Strauss & Co has a multifaceted presence including lectures and valuations. Among the 40 Natal School lots are works by Dr Valerie Leigh (former curator of Pietermaritzburg’s Tatham Art Gallery), Susan Davies, Louise Hall, Anna Alcock, Rauri Alcock, Celeste Matthews and Andrew Verster.

Collectors with an eye for the current global trend towards the understated aesthetic of Scandinavian design are particularly well-served in the current online auction. Included in the over 40 decorative arts lots are a pair of Georg Jensen silver earrings (Lot 42, R4 000 – 6 000), a Danish sterling silver and rose-quartz brooch (Lot 44, R4 000 – 6 000) and a ‘Vivianna’ stainless steel lady’s wristwatch, also from the hand of Danish designer Georg Jensen (Lot 41, R6 000 – 8 000). Other standouts are a 1960s Swedish ebonized ‘Grandessa’ rocking chair (Lot 87, R10 000 – 15 000), a set of six 1950s Swedish beechwood ‘Gracell’ chairs by Yngve Ekström for Gemla (Lot 88, R15 000 – 20 000) and a set of four Danish beech ‘J77’ chairs, designed by Folke Pålsson for FDB Møbelfabrik in the 1960s (Lot 89, R12 000 – 15 000).

We made a concerted effort to put together a focus on Scandinavian design for this   sale,” comments Vanessa Phillips, Joint Managing Director. Olivia Barrell, our Junior Specialist, has a deep passion for, and knowledge of, Scandinavian decorative arts and this has helped with the range and quality of the lots that are on offer. We have complemented this with jewellery, silver and furniture that echoes the design lines of the Scandinavian approach.

“We have also been aware of the desire, especially on the part of our younger clients, to buy jewellery that can be worn and not just kept as an investment. There is a great selection of accessibly priced lots on offer to satisfy these buyers.”

As part of Strauss & Co’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and transparency, the online sale features a comprehensive set of tools to enable bidders to make their choices. These include images, lot details and a condition report that alerts buyers to the absence or presence of visible flaws.

Strauss & Co is an acknowledged pioneer of the online auction platform in South Africa, with its inaugural digital sale having taken place in 2013.  Since moving into the online auction space, Strauss & Co has built a platform that is easy to use, with buyers able to navigate sales from the comfort of their homes during the week-long period of the sale.
