Over R718 000 raised for art bursaries at Michaelis

21 Jul 2011

Cape Town: This week the Michaelis School of Fine Art hosted its much anticipated Alumni and Staff Auction in aid of bursaries and scholarships at the school. Stephan Welz, Managing Director of Strauss & Co. and his team auctioned ninety lots of work by prestigious and emerging artists, raising a substantial sum which the school will use to establish a fund to support talented and needy students with their studies.

This was the first time that the school hosted an auction of this magnitude, with work generously donated by lecturers and former graduates. The generosity of the artists and the bidders together made for an extraordinary and exciting evening, with many lots achieving well above the catalogue.

The excitement in the room was palpable, especially when the top lots came up. Not surprisingly, Jane Alexander’s painted bronze sculpture fetched the top price but the room burst into applause when it was knocked down at R120 000, well beyond its estimates of R40 000 – 60 000. David Brown’s bronze achieved R70 000 and Marlene Dumas’s print, United Europe, R50 000.

Whilst collectors and buyers raised their paddles in aid of the scholarship fund, an enthusiastic crowd watched, enjoying the wine sponsored by Solms-Delta.

Stephen Inggs, Director of the School, commented on how gratifying it was that alumni had given so generously towards raising funds for bursaries and scholarships to benefit future generations of students. Strauss & Co. was congratulated for making the auction such a success, and for their willingness to donate their time and services to this worthy cause.
