Harvey Collection Celebrates South African History

9 Mar 2015

On Monday afternoon, at 4pm, 16 March, an impressive collection of Africana will be offered on auction at Strauss & Co in Cape Town. Items include historic documents, books, sketches and diaries by Sir William Warre, William Daniell, William John Burchell, John Barrow, William Cornwallis Harris, Reverend Latrobe, and Mortimer Menpes.

At the age of 80, Miss Robyn Harvey has decided to part with her collection. Art consultant Antony Wiley comments, “it is extremely unusual to find a woman collector of Africana – how wonderful!” Harvey’s collection reflects a great passion for the South African landscape, her interest in Eastern Cape history, the bush and her love of animals.

Harvey had a long association and friendship with the Johannesburg based book dealer Robin Fryde, who assisted her with her collection, including the Burchell drawings which were bought at auction in London.

Samuel Daniell

Adopted alongside six other children, Harvey was raised by an affluent family in Johannesburg. She was a great supporter of Helen Suzman, and has spent most of her life volunteering and raising funds for the Chris Hani Baragwanath Children’s Ward.

Lot 389 Samuel Daniell ‘Newlands House’ R140 000 – 180 000

A historically relevant work for Capetonians is lot 389: ‘Newlands House’, a watercolour by Samuel Daniell. According to Dr Hans Fransen “This house is almost certainly Nieuweland, Newlands (House) in one of its many guises. Originally a fine Cape Dutch house (as seen here), with a Groot Constantia gable, Charles Somerset added an upper storey, which made it collapse, after which he Georgianised it. An Elliott photograph shows yet another appearance. It was the home of Gwelo Goodman (who ‘restored’ it) and of Joyce Newton Thomson, his biographer and mayor of Cape Town. (…) In the background the saddle between Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak is visible.”
