'n Werk van Freida Lock is vroeër dié maand op 'n veiling van Strauss & Co. verkoop vir net meer as R1 miljoen.
Freida Lock se Kitchen Interior
with a Red Carpet, olie op bord
Lock se Kitchen Interior with a Red Carpet (1951) is vir R1 002 600 verkoop – ’n wêreldrekordprys vir ’n werk van dié kunstenaar.
Nog ’n werk van Lock, Interior with a Red Carpet (sonder jaartal), is vir R891 200 verkoop.
Lock is 1902 in Engeland gebore en het in 1920 saam met haar ouers na Suid-Afrika verhuis.Haar ouers was gekant teen ’n kunstenaarsloopbaan vir hul dogter en Lock het, totdat sy in 1932 terug is Londen toe om kuns te gaan studeer, onder meer as vrugtepakker, goewernante en joernalis gewerk.
In 1935 het sy teruggekeer na Suid-Afrika en in Kaapstad ’n stigterslid van die Nuwe Groep geword. Haar eerste solo-uitstalling was in 1943. In die laat ’40’s het sy na Zanzibar gereis en daar geskilder. Lock is in 1962 in Londen dood.
Ander topverkopers op die Strauss & Co.-veiling was Maggie Laubser, Alexis Preller, Edoardo Villa, Anton van Wouw, Ruth Everard-Haden, J.H. Pierneef, George Pemba en Cecil Skotnes.
Die veiling, wat in twee sessies afgehandel is, het ’n bruto inkomste van R23,5 miljoen opgelewer.
