A Capetonian is the proud owner of Irma Stern's Two Arabs painting, which went for a record-breaking R20m this week.
The Strauss and Co auction of local paintings was held on Monday night at the Vineyard hotel in Cape Town. The sale of the Stern painting broke the record for a South African art piece. There were about 400 people at the auction, said Strauss and Co’s Ann Palmer, head of the paintings department. She said they were very proud of the sale, considering recessionary times. The painting was bought by a private individual for his home.“It was a fantastic painting and we knew it would sell.“The quality of work is superb. It’s not often we get such a wonderful painting to sell. We are thrilled that we found a buyer,” said Palmer.Irma Stern travelled vastly but lived most of her life in Cape Town before her death in 1966.The Irma Stern Museum was established in 1971 at the Rosebank house the artist lived in for almost four decades.
