Auctioneers hope to entice ordinary South Africans into local art

Irma Stern, Still Life of Dahlias and Fruit
Works by some of South Africa's most respected artists in the impressionist/modern period will be on sale - Jan Volschenk, Hugo Naude, Pieter Wenning, Irma Stern, Maggie Laubser, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, Ruth Everard Haden, Robert Gwelo Goodman, Adolph Jentsch, Maud Sumner and George Pemba.
One of the highlights of the Strauss auction is a 1949 painting Barberton (estimate R700000 to R1-million) by JH Pierneef. The auction will also offer a wide range of still-lifes from various periods of Irma Stern's career. Strauss holds a record for a still life by Irma Stern. This was achieved in March last year when South Africa's Stephan Welz, of Strauss & Co, knocked down Magnolias in an Earthernware pot for R7.21-million, said Strauss's Bina Genovese.
Irma Stern's early still life, painted in 1934, a unique middle-period painting of proteas, and a late painting produced in 1960, will be on sale. The works provide an exceptional opportunity to examine the changes in Stern's approach to the handling of her medium and to larger questions of the nature of painting in a rapidly changing world.
Other works on sale include Maggie Laubser's A Still Life of a Jug with Nasturtiums and Apples on a Table (estimate R250000 to R350000), Maurice van Essche's Malay Woman with a Coffee Pot (estimate R400000 to R600000), Maud Sumner's The Thames at Sunset (estimate R300000 to R500000), and Alexis Preller's The Flower King (estimate R800000 to R1.2-million).
A number of works by Edoardo Villa, Cecil Skotnes, Sydney Kumalo, Giuseppe Cattaneo and Cecily Sash are also included in this auction. According to Stephan Welz, "visitors to the preview at The Country Club at Woodmead will have a rare opportunity to see the works of artists who, as a group and as individuals, have had a marked influence on the development of South African art".
